Born in Gorinchem, the Netherlands, in 1946, he graduated in Law from the University of Utrecht. He joined Philips's legal department in Eindhoven in 1973 and, in 1979, was appointed general counsel to Philips Japan.
After six years in Japan and five years with the Corporate Legal Department in Eindhoven, he left the company in 1990 to become director of legal affairs for DAF Trucks. Returning to Philips in 1994, he was appointed director of Legal Affairs, becoming chief legal officer of the company on April 1, 1996.
