Design

Intellectual property
Philips’ substantial investment in R&D has generated many breakthrough inventions, such as the Compact Cassette system and the laser based optical disc systems CD-Audio, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, SACD and various DVD-formats.
  
Research
Founded in Eindhoven, the Netherlands in 1914, Philips Research now is one of the world’s major private research organizations, with laboratories in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Germany, the United States, China and India, collectively some 2,100 people.
  
High Tech Campus
Philips’ High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, will be – when completed in 2005 - the epicenter of its global R&D activities. The developing complex confirms Philips’ philosophy of having a strong presence in the high-tech market and of speeding up the time-to-market for technological innovation. The wide diversity of R&D activities clustered in one single location (covering 174,000 square meters - roughly the equivalent of 30 soccer pitches) makes the Philips High Tech Campus - with an estimated workforce of 8,400 highly qualified professionals - unique in the world.
