"Philips has been in Asia for more than 80 years. Today, there are many growth opportunities in this expanding Asia Pacific market especially in China. We are very encouraged by the pro-business developments in China and the region. Philips' own performance has been a good example," said Mr. Kleisterlee.
Mr. Kleisterlee further added: "Hong Kong is ideal as our regional headquarters for a host of reasons. Apart from the good infrastructure for legal systems, transport, finance and banking, Hong Kong's central location within the region is strategic to supporting regional growth. Our focus in Asia will require and rely on having more and more local talents - be they from design, engineering and marketing - to underpin and sustain our current growth plans." Philips currently employs around 3000 people in Hong Kong and has been attracting young talents into its workforce via internship programs with local universities.
Established in 1948, Philips Electronics Hong Kong continues to play a leading role within the group, globally. Hong Kong is the regional operations hub for several of Philips' businesses including Design, Lighting, Domestic Appliances & Personal Care and Medical Systems, and is also the global headquarters for Mobile Infotainment and Mobile Display Systems.
The company recently moved 400 of its staff to a new 72,000 sq ft office located at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks. The Park's campus environment is well suited for Philips to generate synergistic forces. Operating under one roof with its own R&D center, product development, design studio and showrooms will boost the company's efficiency and innovation competence in the territory. The company will relocate a further 450 or more staff to occupy a new office at Pacific Place Three later this year.
"With a long history, we are proud to contribute to the city's lighting beautification of Hong Kong's landmarks, such as Tsing Ma bridge and Murray House in Stanley, and to be also part of Hong Kong's famous harbour view with our neon signage. We look forward to extending our commitment in Hong Kong, in both business and community activities", said Mr. Andreas Wente.
Beyond business, Philips has been enriching and providing for the lives of the young, old and needy in the community. For example, as chief sponsor of the annual Joint School Science Exhibition (JSSE), the company encourages Hong Kong's youth to use science and technology in exciting new and practical ways. This year, Philips is once again awarded "Caring Company" by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service for its contribution to the community.
Mr. Rowse thanked Philips for its contribution to Hong Kong. He said, "We are delighted that Philips has demonstrated its confidence in Hong Kong by making our city its operations base to manage its wide-ranging businesses in Asia Pacific. Philips and the nearly 1,000 other overseas companies with regional headquarters here confirm Hong Kong's role as a platform for expansion into the high-growth Mainland and regional markets. We will continue to work hard to enhance Hong Kong's attractiveness to investors like Philips."
