The children posed to have their photograph taken with the most coveted prize in the history of sport – thanks to Royal Philips Electronics (Philips), the Official Partner of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ and one of only three companies to have sponsored every FIFA World Cup™ since 1986.
The youngsters are either Po Leung Kuk residential children or Po Leung Kuk Pershing Tsang Primary School students , which is operated by the Po Leung Kuk charity.
The event was made even more special by the guest appearance of football legend George Cohen, who was part of the England team that defeated West Germany 4-2 in the thrilling final of the 1966 World Cup™ Finals at Wembley Stadium.
Cohen, who played over 450 games for Fulham F.C. and was capped 37 times by England, spent time giving the children tips on how to improve their skills and autographed 30 footballs, which were handed out as special souvenirs from Philips.
“Philips is thrilled to be able to share such a famous sporting trophy with a very special Hong Kong charity,” said Yeung Chiu, Director of Brand Management and Corporate Communications of Philips Electronics Hong Kong Limited. “Philips is committed to supporting local communities and charities and we are delighted the children of Pershing Tsang Primary School enjoyed seeing the FIFA World Cup™ Winner’s Trophy today.”
The trophy’s promotional tour also raised HK$50,000 which was donated to Po Leung Kuk Child Sponsorship Programme.
“We are so grateful to Philips for giving our youngsters a fabulous experience which I am sure they will treasure for the rest of their lives. This is indeed an example of outstanding corporate citizenship,” said Quincy Lui, Director of Po Leung Kuk.
The FIFA World Cup ™ Winner’s Trophy is 36 cm tall, made of solid 18-karat gold and weighs 4.97 kg. The base contains two layers of semi-precious malachite and has room for 17 small plaques bearing the names of the winners – enough space for all the FIFA World Cup™ champions up to year 2038.
The priceless trophy, under the supervision of a full-time security guard during the promotional tour, was also taken to St Paul’s College in Hong Kong.
