Following the announcement of the Philips Live Earth global partnership with Philips as its global lighting partner which is sponsoring the 24-hour Live Earth Concert to be carried out across the seven continents worldwide to spread the message of fighting global warming by making a simple switch to energy saving behavior, Philips is now enhancing its green initiative by bringing the make-a-simple-switch campaign to schools in Hong Kong. The energy saving themed campaign aims at inspiring local students to save energy and live an energy efficient life at young. Through the city-wide campaign, Philips provides students with simple and achievable energy saving lighting solutions that every individual can access in their lives at school as well as in their homes. The collective pledges will help solve the pressing climate change crisis, and protect our earth planet.
The first wave of the Philips “Make a simple switch school education campaign” begins with an educational movie road show “An inconvenient truth” at secondary schools. Philips aims to increase students’ awareness and understanding about the climate change issue.
The kick-off ceremony of the Campaign held today at QualiEd College with Principal Mr Chen Hung and Mr Ravi Rajagopalan, General Manager of Lighiting Division of Philips Electronics Hong Kong as the officiating guests.
At the ceremony, Mr Ravi said: ”As the global leader of lighting, Philips has been actively driving energy saving at a global level. We hope to inspire every individual in the world to take action to switch to an energy saving lifestyle by providing them with simple and achievable energy efficient lighting solutions available nowadays, and education will be a key area of our focus because the students will be the future of Hong Kong.”
Mr Ravi said if everyone can make energy saving a habit and spread the message to our family members and friends, make a simple switch from low energy efficiency lighting to energy saving lighting, will help substantially reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions, to green Hong Kong and to green the world.
Officiating at the opening, Principal Chen Hung said, “I watched the documentary movie when it was first launched in Hong Kong, and found the climate crisis we are facing as human beings is pressing and shocking. We fully support Philips’ make-a-simple-switch energy saving school campaign because we shared the same belief that to raise awareness on climate change should start with education at school because the students are the master of our future. We should educate them on energy saving as soon as they are in school.”
Around 200 students from Form one to Form three at QualiEd College joined today’s movie viewing. Philips representative also shared some simple energy saving lighting solutions with the students and gave each participant an energy saving light bulb and a booklet.
Ten energy saving solutions to help stop global warming:

- Energy Saver lasts six to ten times longerthan traditional incandescent bulbs
- a Philips Energy Saver saves up to HK$12 electricity tariff per month (calculated on the basis of 5 hours of use per day)
- an Energy Saver releases less heat and reduces light pollution

3.Recycle more
4.Check your tires
5.Use less hot water
6.Adjust your thermostat
7. Plant a tree
8.Turn off electronic devices
9.Avoid products with a lot of packaging
10.Be a part of the solution
Philips will launch a comprehensive series of activities in September to primary, secondary and universities students as momentum programs of the Make a Simple Switch Campaign.
Philips started a global campaign on energy saving last year, advocating to the industry, governments, the business sector and social organizations to take action in replacing traditional lighting with energy saving lighting solutions. This will drastically reduce the emission of carbon dioxide, thus contributing to countering global warming. This energy saving campaign has created ripples, and not only do the industry and the governments pledge support to abandon traditional incandescent light bulbs - in the streets of London, and in Europe, people have progressively shifted to the Cosmopolis energy saving system, produced by Philips for public use and street illumination. At present, Philips is introducing this energy efficient public illumination system to Hong Kong and other Asian countries.
