Philips is calling for all people in Hong Kong to take action against climate change and global warming by making a simple switch in lifestyle and the way energy is used.
The launch of asimpleswitch.com is part of Philips’ Live Earth global campaign which marks an important milestone in Philips’ commitment to advocating in Hong Kong an energy efficient way of living that will help make a real difference to the environment by substantially reducing energy consumption and cost.
Officiating at the ceremony, Mr Wiebo Vaartjes, CEO of Philips Electronics Hong Kong said, “Philips’ asimpleswitch.com website provides the perfect platform to showcase solutions for efficient energy use and the simple steps that we all can take to fight global warming. As a global leader in lighting, Philips believes in providing simple solutions to complex problems such as sustainable development. Our portfolio of energy efficient lighting products can save 40% on electricity on average, and some of our products can even save up to 80% of the energy costs while maintaining high quality standards.”
Presently, there are 11 million incandescent light bulbs in Hong Kong’s homes. If they are all replaced by energy efficient lighting, such as the Philips Tornado, the latest energy saving bulb available for the Hong Kong market, 1.4 billion in energy costs will be saved per year, representing a 505 million kg reduction in CO2 emissions. The same applies to energy consumption by the commercial sector where 2 million incandescent bulbs and 14 million fluorescent tubes are used. If all those are replaced by energy efficient lighting, up to 1,166 million in energy costs can be saved per year.
Philips research shows that if 10 million households each replaces a 60W incandescent lamps with a 12W Tornado while maintaining the usage level of five hours a day, this would lead to an annual saving in energy equivalent to one 400MW power station.
In view of this situation, it is really time for Hong Kong people to take individual responsibility to act against climate change. In this connection, asimpleswitch.com can act as an inspiring means to encourage people to make a personal “simple switch” pledge to lead a more energy efficient lifestyle.
Commenting on the launch of Philips’ asimpleswitch.com, Al Gore, former US Vice President and Live Earth spokesperson said, “We are thrilled that Philips is supporting Live Earth in our common effort to solve the climate crisis. And Philips has proved that corporations can and should be part of the solution to this crisis. Together we can continue to get out the word that there are many simple and accessible solutions that help reduce our energy consumption and cut global warming.”
Philips’ asimpleswitch.com will track collective pledges to change to energy efficient lighting and calculate on the website the resulting energy and cost saved.
Since its launch on July 5 worldwide, more than 128,000 people have already made their pledges to switch to an energy efficient lifestyle. The latest statistics are as follows:
