How to clean/sterilise the Philips Avent breast pump?
It is important to clean your Philips Avent breast pump regularly. Find out how to maintain good breast pump hygiene.
Follow the instructions
Clean/sterilise the breast pump as per the instructions below.
Note: If you are using the electric breast pump, there is no need to sterilise the silicone tubes and caps as the milk is not in contact. You SHOULD NOT clean the motor unit and adapter in water but wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
Start with disassembling the breast pump and unscrew the bottle from the pump body. Make sure you either use the milk right away or store it in the refrigerator (up to 48 hours and not in the door) or freezer (up to 3 months).
Unplug the power unit (in case you use the electric breast pump), after that you can carefully disassemble the breast pump further
Remove the white valve. Be careful when you remove the white valve and when you clean it. If it gets damaged, your breast pump does not function properly. To remove the white valve, gently pull at the ribbed tab on the side of the valve.
Rinse with hot water
Clean all parts (except motor unit and adapter) in hot water with some mild washing-up liquid and then rinse them thoroughly. You can also clean the parts in the dishwasher (on the top rack only). To clean the valve, rub it gently between your fingers in warm water with some washing-up liquid. Do not insert objects into the valve, as this may cause damage.
Sterilise all parts (except silicone tubes, caps, motor and adapter) in a Philips AVENT steam steriliser or by boiling them for 5 minutes. Make sure to allow for a cool-down period after the sterilising cycle has ended: the breast pump can be too hot to touch immediately after sterilising.
